Mierystock tunnel (what3words finishing.wove.squares) is a disused railway tunnel measuring 242 yards long that runs under the A4136 road from Monmouth to Gloucester, Work on the tunnel started in 1872 to connect Gloucestershire’s Severn & Wye line with the Great Western’s Ross and Monmouth network at Lydbrook. On 11th July 1960, a final train braved Mierystock’s darkness.

In the Seventies, the abandoned tunnel had a breezeblock wall erected just inside its entrance, and the cutting was obliterated by 30,000 tonnes of colliery waste.

There is a campaign to re-open the Mierystock Tunnel for walkers and cyclists.

Close to Mierystock is a secluded fishing pond, known as Waterloo Screens, used by The Royal Forest of Dean Angling Club.
A new memorial to miners was constructed in 2022 and sits on the northern edge of the pond. The memorial commemorates an accident at Waterloo Colliery in June 1949 when the pit flooded as old workings were breached. What could have been a disaster was prevented by the actions of a small number of men and no lives were lost;
