Ross on Wye & District

Local History 2

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
When: Monthly on Thursday afternoons 2:00 pm
3rd Thursday

Our Group has only been running since the start of the year - and we do have spaces.

Initially, during the colder months, we met at the Larrapurz centre. For the first couple of meetings, we looked at photos of old Ross and talked about the schools and school life in Ross, and talked about the pubs and inns, of which we seem to have had many!! We have several members in the group who have a vast and varied knowledge of the town having lived here all their lives and it's a pleasure to hear their stories.

We've been to the Motor Sports Club to have a talk on its history and in June 2024 members of Ross Rowing Club will be talking to us about the history of their club.

We have a meeting in August at St. Mary's Church and we've also done half of a walk given to me by Mary Sinclair Powell (a local historian) showing points of interest around the town. The second half is to be slotted in hopefully in July.

We are open to suggestions from anyone interested in the local history of Ross-on-Wye. Outings suggested are a visit to Garway Church because of its connection to the Knights Templar. A walk and discussion on the history of the riverbank. We will also be looking for anyone who could give us talks during the winter months when it's not so enjoyable being outdoors. The group is self-generating so members will be asked for their input.

Our group meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 2 o'clock and we'd love you to join us.
